Olympic mascots in years

The Olympic Mascots have been a main element of the olympic images for years, a mascot should always be able to concentrate all the olympic spirit, communicate the concepts of each Olympic Games and promote the history and culture of the host city.

Given the upcoming Beijing Games, I decided to do an insight of the olympic mascots throughout their history and here is what I found out starting from the first one... a list of names pictures and a bit of history for each:

Waldi - 1972 Summer Games, Munich Germany

Waldi the Dachsund was very popular this year, specially for being the first ever, but he also has the qualities indispensable to an athlete: resistance, tenacity and agility. He has some of the pastel colors from the olympics.

Amik - 1976 Summer Games, Montreal Canada

The next mascot was a beaver named Amik, the name comes from an indian language of Canada and it means beaver. It simbolizes hard work. In my opinion the worst mascot of history.

Misha - 1980 Summer Games, Moscow Russia

It has been described as the cutest mascot in olympic games history Misha was developed by renowned illustrator of children's books Victor Chizikov. It became an international success instantly.

Sam the Eagle - 1984 Summer Games, Los Angeles, USA

Sam was designed by Walt Disney and it is a cartooned eagle with the main american characteristics, it wears the same clothes as legendary Uncle Sam and has the typical colors of the USA. The bald eagle, also has been named the official animal of the USA. This is the year that the commercial use of olympic mascots was initiated.

Hodori - 1988 Summer Games, Seoul Korea

This little tiger was designed wit typical oriental colors and it was an amicable tiger, which portrays the friendly and hospitable traditions of Koreans. Ho is derived from the korean word for tiger and Dori is diminutive for boys. It wore the olympic rings around its neck like a medal while sporting a traditional Korean dance hat on its head.

Cobi - 1992 Summer Games, Barcelona Spain

This mascot, which I like to call 'the naked mascot' for obvious reasons, was a dog named Cobi. The committee for the olympics these year had even produced a TV series in which Cobi could communicate with the spirits of the games. It was created by the Valencian artist Javier Mariscal.

Izzy - 1996 Summer Games, Atlanta Georgia

Izzy was the first mascot designed by computer,
and it was also the first amorphous mascot with an abstract fantasy figure. Supposedly the name Izzy is derived from "What is it" because no one seemed to know exactly what Izzy was.

Syd, Ollie and Millie - 2000 Summer Games, Sydney Australia

They are three native australian animals who represent earth, air and water. Olly represents the olympic spirit of generosity; Syd, represents the environment and captures the energy of Australia and its people; and Millie, is a techno whiz and information guru, with all the facts and figures at her fingertips. This is the first time multiple mascots were used, as well as different sex mascots.

Athena and Phevos - 2004 Summer Games, Athens Greece

This olympic mascots with their whacking feet, long necks and puny heads, one was colored in deep yellow and the other one in blue, they were based on thousand of year old dolls who where discovered at archeological sites in Greece. Supposedly in greek mythology they were brother and sister, named after the god of light and music and the goddess of wisdom.

The Fuwa - 2008 Summer Games, Beijing China

The Fuwa means good luck dolls and are comprised of five members which include Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying and Nini. Each of these seem like a cute name, but when put together they sound identical to the phrase 'Beijing welcomes you'. The five figures and their colors also represent the five olympic rings.

So as we can see, the challenge of making an olympic mascot apparently always involve some kind of whacky, crazy story, sometimes magical, sometimes mythological... and In my opinion we have yet to see a great one, some of them have been good, but must of them I think have been just plain...

W

Oliver Stone has already started working on his newest blockbuster hit... whats it gonna be called? a simple letter.... W, or how they've been promoting it... dubyah... The director... being famous for his controversial films like JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Nixon, and World Trade Center, now brings us this kind of comic, dramatic biopic of the life of the current american president George W. Bush, his rise to power and his controversies around the world... it sure will be an interesting film, plus in my opinion, the casting is excellent.... Josh Brolin as George Bush is incredible... today I saw him on a magazine cover and thought it was the actual president himself, but it turned out to be Brolin.... Brolin was in such films like No Countro for Old Men and Into the Blue...

Anyways... looks interesting, however, dont expect the greatest entertaining film... most of Mr. Stones films are very good indeed, but very slow and long... It has been announced that after W, he will start production on a Pablo Escobar biopic, you know, the one Vinnie Chase wanted on Entourage....

The Green Trend

Dont you feel that recently everything you hear in the news its that something has turned 'Green'? its either, the new Washington Nationals stadium which is built in a way to help nature, or a new electric car that helps take care of the environment, everybody is getting on the 'Green' trend, well, so big was the impact on a Golden Retriever belonging to a Dog Breeder in California that he should be taking care of the environment, that she gave birth to a GREEN DOG!!! thats right, the mama dog had 5 puppies, 4 of them were a nice golden color and the fifth one named 'Wasabi' by their owners was born green.
Skeptics were obviously saying that the dog was dyed green and this was precisely some publicity stunt to promote the Green way of living, but veterinarians have now proven that a dog can be born with green colored fur because the placenta's color is green and sometimes it rubs off at birth... amazing....

10 items or less.... start watching!

I recently have been watching a relatively new show, called 10 items or less, it airs on TBS at 11 pm ET/PT, and is currently finishing its second season... The show is really good, its kind of like The Office but in a supermarket, Leslie Pool (The Boss) and main character, really relates to the Boss from the office (Steve Carell) and one of the main funny things of the show its that its kind of improvised live, some lines are from the script and some are brand new. Its full of witty fun characters and its very entertaining to see... here is a more complete synopsis of the show that I found online:

In 10 Items or Less, Lehr plays Leslie Pool, who returns to his native Ohio to run the Green & Grains grocery store, he has just inherited from his father. His somewhat dysfunctional staff includes Carl (Robert Clendenin – That '70s Show), the sweet, doofus stockboy who serves as Leslie's sidekick; Yolanda (Roberta Valderrama – ER), the straight-talking dominant force in the produce department who's also pregnant with Carl's baby; Buck (Greg Davis Jr. – The King of California), the bagger who is looking towards the future by attending night school; Ingrid (Kirsten Gronfield – Steve Saves L.A.), the quirky-soft-spoken customer service representative who lives for Renaissance festivals; Richard (Christopher Liam Moore– Judging Amy), the dignified cashier who dreams of becoming a professional ice dancer; and Todd (Chris Payne Gilbert – The Broken Hearts Club), the sexy butcher who hopes one day to be a stock car driver.Lovespring International), who manages the Super Value Mart down the street. He has known her since high school where she was the popular beauty queen and he, a nerd. Seeking to undermine Green & Grains is Leslie's arch nemesis, Amy (Jennifer Elise Cox – Lovespring International), who manages the Super Value Mart down the street. He has known her since high school, where she was the popular beauty queen and he, a nerd.

Anyways, its a great show, that probably like most shows they will soon cancel, so start watching, and lets hope that they do not take it off the air, because there are just 13 episodes available, 5 for the first season and 8 for the second. I hope they pick it up for a third and this time at least do 16...

Suing Doggy Style

I just read this on the news and thought it was LK worth, it seems that a driver in Minnesota ran over a miniature pinscher of a cedrtain family and he is truly bothered by the act, and wants compensation for it, and is suing the family for 1,100 dlls!!!! its incredible where these suing acts have end up...

here is the original note:

Jeffery Ely was driving near Duluth, Minnesota, on January 4th when Fester, a miniature pinscher, ran into the road.

Ely's 1997 Honda Civic struck Fester, killing the 5.8-kilogram dog instantly.

Now Ely is suing Fester's owners for about $1,100 for damage to his car, time he had to take off from his two jobs to get the car repaired, and court fees.

Ely tells Duluth News Tribune he feels sorry for the family's loss but feels they must be responsible for their pets' actions. He's a dog owner himself.

Fester's owners have countersued Ely, for $2,400.

Amazing....

Iron Man

Just went to the movies to see Iron Man, and I can honestly say its an INCREDIBLE movie, I think that the people on IMDB rated it a bit high though, it currently holds an 8.4 record, making it #159 on the all time movie list, Im not sure if I would include the movie in that list, but I sure give it that grade, if not more, its a funny, entertaining, comedic action film, with a lot of satire in Tony Starks personality, Ive never been a fan of Iron Man, but I sure am now.
Did a little research after the movie to see which other superhero movies the marvel guys are producing and here are some that I found out, lets see which ones are good, and which ones are just plain garbage like Catwoman.

The list:

Captain America (2009)

Wolverine (2009)

Ant Man (2010)
The Avengers (TBA)

Thor (TBA)

Nick Fury (TBA)

Luke Cage (TBA)

Deathlok (TBA)

Supposedly Marvels strategy is to market two movies each year, this year being Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk, next year, Captain America and Wolverine, and so on... seems like they have their hands full for a while, I personally dont understand how now one has greenlighted a Gambit movie.
