Stacking up to the Giant: Cuil

Today, a bunch of ex Google employees, launched their pet project... a new search engine called Cuil, pronounced like 'cool', and their idea is to compete against the giant, and hurt its most notable weaknesses Google, right now has control of almost all the internet searches...

Cuil is fronted by Anna Patterson who has a PhD in computer science, and the search engine claims to be the biggest search engine index, consisting of almost 120 billion pages... her husband Tom Costello is currently the CEO of Cuil...

So what is the main difference between Google and Cuil? You can clearly see that Cuil wants to battle the giant, starting with the idea that the main page has a black background with a search box in the middle, simple yet opposite... and when you do a search, instead of just getting the results list, you get three columns, that might show a picture of what you looked for and a brief summary of the webpage, say 50 to 100 words... the feature that I really do like that Cuil brings to the table, is the narrow by category which appears on the side. For example, I did a Cuil search on Rafa Marquez (the mexican soccer star) and got several fan pages and news pages talking about the player, however on the narrow by category field, you can click on Mexico International Football Players, or Mexican Footballers, or Fifa World Cup 2006 players, FC Barcelona Players, etc.

To sum up, the search engine has good ideas and an interesting search format, however I find it hard to believe that users will change to Cuil, especially since Google, already has been inserted in the Firefox/Camino/IExploere/Safari Browsers, so until Cuil doesn't find a formula to battle this out, I guess using Google is still just easier...

When you look for it on your web browser be sure to write down CUIL and not CULI, or else you will get an italian pornsite... kind of reminds me of the hotmail, hotmial incident back in the days...
